I walked the Malecon today and watched for a while as the city workers worked on dismantling the world's largest catrina. It is a process that takes a couple of days. Lots of welding involved - because it is so large and must withstand potential high winds. Last year we experienced a large storm just after Dia de los Muertos. It rained a lot and sadly the "makeup" was running on most of the catrinas. This year we only had a light sprinkle a week after the big event so they were still looking pretty fresh.
Let me take this opportunity to remind you dear reader that you can still experience Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos_ here in Vallarta every Monday at 10 am. We have our "Day of the Dead Cemetery Tour" every Monday at 10 am which starts with the guide lecture on the customs and meanings of Day of the Dead. Then we tour the oldest cemetery in Puerto Vallarta the 5 Decembre Cemetery. Our guide will introduce us to some famous residents of Vallarta from the past including mayors and Vallarta's most famous painter.
The tour will also visit the very controversial shrine paying homage to the underworld's "saint" Santa Muerte. It gets scarier as a shrine is being added to pay respects to Satan. If you are a believer, you may want to stop by the main Vallarta church before the tour for some holy water. At minimum wear a crucifix. Just in case.
We will end the tour at a very favorite lunch spot with the local workers of the area called La Chula (Calle San Salvador 230) The food is great, and the service is ever so friendly. And the prices are very reasonable.
If you will be in Puerto Vallarta for Day of the Dead 2025, our tour is already posted and available for reservations. Space is limited and the tours have sold out the past two years.
Christmas decorations will come to the Malecon very soon now.
